My Blog

Thanks for reading

I’m a married man!

Sorry I haven’t updated in so long.  So much has happened, it’s insane.  Amanda and I finally got hitched after 5+ years of courting and staring into each other’s eye sockets.  We hung out with some family members, and then finally, we went to Ocho Rios, Jamaica for our honeymoon.  It was a great time, very relaxing (in Jamaica) and so nice to spend so much time with Amanda with no work in the way.  As of today, we are back to being working stiffs, and not getting to be with each other constantly.  I miss her already.

While away from work (and the internet) for two weeks, I was actually able to think clearly about… stuff.  There are a few things I would like to try doing differently.  Notice I said ‘try’.  I’m not going to make a grand declaration that I’m going to make radical changes that will forever change the face of this planet, but there are some new directions I would like to go in:

  • Amanda and I will start going for walks after work every day, or as often as possible.  This way we can get a little exercise, but also we’ll have some time away from electronic distractions and we can clear our minds a bit and just have some ‘us’ time.
  • Amanda and I will start working on some way to work less and spend more time with each other.  We may attempt to start our own business or something, we aren’t sure yet.
  • I decided to spend more time in meatspace and less time online.  I have just been too absorbed with the goings-ons of the internet when there is a world out there that I have yet to explore as deeply as I have blogs and web sites.  When I was in Jamaica, I had so much fun just being outdoors and looking at trees or the sky or animals or people.  It’s very calming and relaxing, and just walking around a little bit is more exercise than I would get surfing the web.
  • Since I’ll be spending more time in the real world, I’ve decided to return to learning the guitar.  I’m a halfway decent guitar player, but I have much to learn.  I would rather be a ‘good’ guitar player than a halfway decent one.  I bought a set of Elixir strings for my acoustic and another set for my electric guitar (Fender Strat) and have begun learning riffs and chords to some Nirvana songs from a book I bought.  It’s going pretty well so far.  I want to make sure to always stay outside of my comfort zone with the guitar so I’m always learning new stuff and pushing myself as a musician.  Using some open source software I intend to record some songs on my PC, and if I really get into it, I might eventually buy Pro Tools or get a Mac with GarageBand.  We’ll see what happens.  Either way, it should be fun.
  • My blog, my blog, my blog.  What to do with it?  I kinda like to have a place where people can keep up with me, but I kinda want something I can just put up and be done with, like a web site as opposed to a blog.  I am seriously considering offering my services as a web designer and just having a static web site with a little personal info, a contact page and what services I offer.  I would only take small jobs that involve static pages.  I’m no PHP guru, and although I know my way around WordPress pretty well, there are other people who are much more qualified.  I am very well versed in Strict XHTML and I’m no slouch with the Javascript and the CSS either.  Small jobs are more fun for me and much faster.  Also It will be a great way to supplement my current income.  So if you come by one day and this blog is gone and in its place stands a web design site, you’ll know why.  Don’t worry, I’ll save the SQL database in case I ever decide to blog again.

To quote that guy in ‘The Sweater Song’ by Weezer, “Life’s so rad”.  I would have to agree.  It’s weird having such a huge event happen in your life, especially one that leaves no visible reminders.  I do however feel changed by this experience (for the better, obviously) and being married to Amanda makes me want to be the best person I can be.  For her and for myself.
