My Blog

Thanks for reading

I changed my mind about the direction of this site.

I just read a post by Khoi Vinh about how he delegates his time to get stuff done in his life. Although I don’t know how many hits a day he gets or anything like that, he has what I would consider a popular and successful blog. I admit that I’ve often wanted a blog like that. One where everyone visits and comments and feed reads, etc. Now that I am reading how hard he works on the blog, and how little sleep he gets, I realize what goes in to having such a successful blog, and I don’t think I really want it that bad.

First of all, he’s single, which he states frees up a lot of time for him. I love spending time with Amanda, and I don’t want to trade that for more blogging time. Our jobs and commutes keep us plenty busy, and by the time we get home and eat, it’s almost time to go to bed just so we can start all over again the next day. It’s all I can do sometimes to squeeze in watching a movie or Heroes or Lost with her, and by the time I have time to blog about that I just won’t feel like it anymore.

Secondly, this is a personal blog, so I should just talk about either myself or whatever I want. I know that blogs of that nature don’t generally do well as far as visitors and search engine rankings, but it’s what I feel like doing. So I want to have a popular web site, but on my terms. Which I don’t think is going to work out.

So it seems that (if I keep feeling the same way) I may not blog about anything special. Nothing that has a wide appeal. I might just talk about myself or something cool that I did, or who knows what. At this point I’d rather just have fun than give myself another job after I get home from my job. Either way, this doesn’t change the fact that I’m having fun redesigning my site. And who knows? I could change my mind again tomorrow.

You’re right: it will be harder to have a popular blog without having a defined niche. But, personally, I’d much rather read some personal stuff, or a variety of shifting interests, than just another blog about blogging, or design, or… I LIKE it when the personality informs the content.

I’m with you, “I want to have a popular web site, but on my terms”. That sums it up. More important than it being popular, I want my site not to look heinous, and not to cause heartache to people navigating it. As long as it does those two things, and lets me blather on about what I deem important, it’s a success to me.
